A WORLD ENRICHED WITH SCIENCE

Purpose

Science Makes the World Safer

Science is a way of knowing that uses the rigour of methodology to understand the world and make predictions. This predictive capacity allows scientists to develop processes and products that make life safer and reduce suffering. Its power to do good lies in the thoughtful application of science.

Science is Specialized and Takes Skill to Communicate Well

As science has become more specialized, so too has its language and detail. But this is not the root of the stickiest communication challenges. The bigger issue is this: it’s hard to remember how you viewed the world before you studied science. The first step is to find common ground on which a science story can be built.

Creativity is Required!

Our daily lives are rich with information and visuals, making it difficult to capture and hold attention in today’s saturated media landscape. Science cannot speak for itself. Data cannot speak for itself. Creativity and storytelling are required.

Audiences Deserve Respect

An audience is not a blank slate to be filled with scientific facts. They already have thoughts about your area of science — some informed, some not — and they want to be engaged in something closer to a conversation, even when they are being entertained. They bring to that conversation the sum of beliefs and experiences shaped by their own unique lives. If you are truly interested in dialogue, respect that.
